Author: Hot Mumma
Anxiety is underlying fears that may seem beyond our control. Anxiety can produce many negative consequences that can interfere with your optimal performance on the job or with life in general.
Anxiety can cause chronic worry and negative thoughts for some people that distracts them from doing their best. However, this feeling can also result in a number of additional negative consequences.
For example, anxiety can be directed inward, causing self-doubt and hesitation that keeps people from acting confidently and effectively in their lives. In the extreme, being anxious can produce chronic procrastination and can make you avoid important tasks that could seriously jeopardize a person's effectiveness and success.
Anxiety can also cause a host of physical and mental problems such as sleep difficulties, problems with concentration and focus, and general uneasiness. At its worst, anxiety can result in panic attacks, during which a person experiences symptoms such as a very rapid heart rate, chest tightness, a choking sensation, hyperventilation, and sometimes a fear of dying.
All this sounds so negative! But anxiety can be good in small doses! Anxiety is energy that can help to charge us up and prepare us for action. Feeling anxious might signal that something needs attention--that there is something in your life you may need to face. It can also help motivate us on to greater personal growth and achievement.
Anxiety often stems from feelings of uncertainty or feeling unstable. Events in our lives contribute to these feelings - things like - the birth of a baby, a new job, financial pressures, trying to balance work with home or an illness. Sometimes we are just predispositioned to being more anxious than others by placing too much pressure upon ourselves.
Facing your fears directly can have an empowering and liberating effect from anxiety. As you fight your fears, they WILL become smaller. Here are some suggestions for breaking the cycle of anxiety:
1. Believe that you have the power to overcome your fears.
2. Stop yourself from thinking negative thoughts - get the situation into perspective.
3. If anxiety causes physical problems such as sweaty palms, heart-racing, shallow breathing, or nervousness - turn to deep breathing or counting to conquer the fear.
4.Relabel the anxiety as energy or excitement. Having a positive attitude towards the fear will also help deminish it.
5. Take small steps to get yourself moving through the fear and towards conquering it! You will conquer your anxieties and fight your fears!
